Laboratory of Nanocrystalline Structures (No. 05)

[History], [Research Activity], [Staff]

Head of the Laboratory – Dr. Dmytro Derecha

History of the Laboratory

The Laboratory of Nanocrystalline Structures No. 05 was established at the Institute of Magnetism in 2006. From the time of its foundation until 2016, the laboratory was headed by D. Sc. Mykola Krupa. In the course of the institutional reorganisation in 2016, the Laboratory of Surface Physics No. 07 (headed by Dr. Dmytro Derecha) was merged into the laboratory. At present, Laboratory No. 05 is subordinate to the Department of Physics of Meso- and Nanocrystalline Magnetic Structures.

Research Activities

The research activities of the laboratory are closely integrated into the general thematic scope of Department No. 03, which focuses on multicomponent, heterogeneous materials, composites, and magnetic phenomena in mesoscopic and nanoscale systems.

Principal Research Directions of Laboratory No. 05:

Magnetoelectrochemistry and interfacial processes: investigation of the specific features of electrochemical processes under the influence of external magnetic fields and intrinsic magnetostatic stray fields of electrodes during both electrodeposition and corrosion;
Magnetic sensors and non-destructive testing: development of magnetic field sensors, investigation of the effect of aggressive media on the service life of constructional and thermal power engineering equipment, development of magnetic techniques of non-destructive testing of industrial equipment;
Magnetic technologies in resource and energy conservation: development of magnetic methods for the treatment and neutralisation of liquid wastes from electroplating production by means of ferritisation in pulsed or alternating magnetic fields;
Crystallization, magnetoplastic and magnetorheological effects: investigation of the influence of magnetic fields and thermodynamic factors on nucleation and crystallisation processes in functional structures;

Scientific and Industrial Cooperation

The Laboratory of Nanocrystalline Structures No. 05 maintains domestic Ukrainian scientific collaborations and conducts research in the interests of the industrial sector. Among the key partners of the laboratory are:
- Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (KNUBA) — joint research and personnel training.
- Trypilska Thermal Power Plant of PJSC "Сentrenergo" — implementation of non-destructive magnetic testing methods and diagnostics of equipment service life in the thermal power industry under aggressive environmental conditions.

Principal Research Projects of the Laboratory

Ongoing:
– In-house project (fundamental) № 0124U000455 "Effects of magnetoelasticity and magnetic field-induced critical deformations of magnetoactive elastomers";
– In-house project (applied) № 0124U000558 Low-power thermoelectric and magnetoelastic converters for power generation and cooling systems".
